This course provides a systematic analysis of Pneumatology, the study of the "spirit" or "vital force" as a conceptual category in Western intellectual history and philosophy. Rather than exploring personal belief, the curriculum treats the subject as an investigation into how various systems of thought have defined non-material agency, inspiration, and communal connectivity.
Students will examine the linguistic and philosophical evolution of the "spirit" concept, from its ancient etymological roots to its role in shaping theories of consciousness, social movements, and institutional power.
